Now more than ever has been the case, 3D TV has come to the forefront of tech buzz. I can’t help but wonder if it will the technology will ever create actual demand behind it. TV manufacturers are obviously gaga over the technology and content providers are pumping money into the technology needed to make it happen.

With all shifts in technology, there is an adaptation and adoption curve. VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray. Here’s where the shift to 3D-technology brings in a whole new hurdle, though: the glasses. Now I need to put something on in order to enjoy the full offering of 3D TV. You’re adding weight, a whole new item to lose, and a new required action to take advantage of the technology shift. To the everyday (read: lazy) consumer, that may be asking just a little too much.

Consider the shift from VHS to DVD. It required new hardware, but you weren’t asking for a shift in user behavior. A movie-watcher still needed a piece of media. They still needed to load it. Sure the new devices were initially more expensive, but there was very little need for change in the “consumer action” field. It’s amazing what people will pay for laziness.

3D TV may be very cool. But will the pro’s outweigh the cons given the technological and behavioral hurdles that still exist? Maybe not.

If you’re still in the dark on 3D TVs and the technology behind it, Amazon, not surprisingly, has a great set of videos (obviously with intent to sell, but still honest and easy-to-follow) on what they are and how they work. Check out their 3D 101 (sounds like a Star Wars character) site.
